There may also be a Cassandra-centric fic in the near future (as in some time tonight), so keep an eye out for that too.

Paths on the Sea

The first time Colby stood on a beach and just watched the surf come in, hissing and foaming, was when he'd first come to California. Sure, he'd seen it in the Middle East during his tour duty and when he was training for the FBI, but he hadn't had a chance to just stand and watch it like most native Californians who lived on the coast didn't.

He imagined that anyone around was watching him with a bemused smile, but one thing Colby had never been was self-conscious of anonymous people's opinions of him. Those he knew and worked with on a regular basis were a whole different ball game. His prediliction for watching the tide come in was one thing he hid quite well and it made him thankful that he wasn't in a serious relationship, at least not serious enough for his significant other to live with him and therefore didn't question Colby if he wasn't at the apartment.

The move to California also increased Colby's longing for snow. It was only a week until Christmas and it didn't even get below freezing once the sun went down. He saw people wearing heavy sweaters and long-sleeves that weren't pushed up to the elbow and smiled to himself as he looked down at his t-shirt and jeans. One of these days he'd ask for a day off and drive out to Big Bear, Lake Arrowhead, or even drive up to Yosemite.

With a soft sigh, he turned away from the sun setting over the ocean and walked up to the sidewalk in front of the beachfront homes and headed for the Pier. If he remembered correctly, there was a shop there that specialized in shell necklaces; something he'd promised to get for Cassandra when she found out he was moving to Los Angeles.

His phone vibrated against his hip and he grabbed it, the name on the caller ID making him smile. "Hey, Charlie."

End.
