Stay

Vin sighed softly and curled deeper into the large easy chair in the den. Across the room, on the couch, Chris glanced up from the papers he had spread out on the coffee table. Vin was asleep, his head pillowed on his left arm which was resting on the arm of the chair. The blanket that Chris had covered him with half an hour before had slid down to the seat cushion, revealing the cast on Vin's right arm.

When the two men were out riding the week before, Peso had been spooked by a rattler and threw Vin, who landed awkwardly, his right arm had impacted with a large rock, the ulna and radius snapping like twigs. It had taken Chris fifteen minutes to get Peso calmed down. Peso hadn't been too enthused with the idea of bearing someone other than Vin, but Chris figured Vin needed a steadier, more compliant horse for the ride back to the ranch, so Chris had helped Vin up onto Pony's back before mounting Peso. That had seemed like the longest ride Chris had ever experienced, he'd kept a sharp eye on Vin the entire ride back, watching as Vin's shoulders became more and more tense from pain. Chris would have radioed for one of the boys to bring a truck to where they were if they hadn't been riding an old sheep trail that was barely wide enough for them to ride single file, let alone passable for a truck.

Upon returning to the ranch, Chris 'asked' Buck to keep an eye on Adam while Chris and Vin went to the hospital. Buck had nodded reluctantly, concern in his eyes. Vin had assured Buck he'd be just fine with Chris, his face was blank, but Chris could read the pain and tension that fairly radiated from Vin.

Chris was brought out of his thoughts by a warm, lithe body settling next to his on the couch. He leaned into the warmth a little with an inaudible sigh. A tanned hand reached out and turned his head to meet clear blue eyes. There were times when Chris felt he could get lost in those hypnotic eyes and sometimes, when he did get lost in Vin's eyes, his control over his mind and tongue loosened enough for him to say things that he was too proud to say out loud.

Five words drifted between them, feather light and just as soft, settling deep into their hearts and souls and curling up deep inside where nothing else could touch them. Chris wrapped an arm around Vin's shoulders and leaned back, drawing Vin with him. Vin, for his part, wrapped his good arm around Chris' waist and curled against Chris' side with a contented sigh.

"Stay here with me," Chris whispered softly into Vin's hair.

Vin curled even closer to Chris' side. "Always."

End.
